POLISH ARCHBISHOP THINKS VATICAN WILL RECOGNIZE MEDJUGORJE APPARITIONS

WARSAW, Poland (CNS) — A Polish archbishop who inspected Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Medjugorje shrine for the pope predicted the Vatican will soon recognize its Marian apparitions.

“The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has passed all documentation to the Secretariat of State — everything suggests the apparitions will be accepted before the year ends,” said Archbishop Henryk Hoser.

“It’s difficult to believe the six visionaries have been lying for 36 years,” the archbishop said. “What they say is coherent, and none is mentally disturbed, while the apparitions’ faithfulness to church doctrine is also a powerful argument for their authenticity.”

The archbishop spoke as he completed a report from his spring mission to the hilltop shrine, which has not been officially recognized by the church despite 2.5 million pilgrims annually.

He told Poland’s Catholic Information Agency, KAI, he had found an “exceptional atmosphere” of “spiritual creativeness” at Medjugorje, characterized by “prayer, silence, meditation, Eucharist, adoration, fasting and reconciliation.”

He added that the shrine was seeing “huge dynamic growth,” in contrast to older sanctuaries in Portugal, France and Poland and had succeeded in remaining “a true place for pilgrims” while “eliminating tourist elements.”

“Everything is moving in a good direction. My mission wasn’t aimed at closing Medjugorje down, but at evaluating whether pastoral work is being properly organized there in line with church teaching,” Archbishop Hoser said.

“My conclusions are that it is, and my impression is highly positive,” he told KAI.

Six teenagers claim to have seen the Virgin Mary June 24, 1981, near Medjugorje. Since then, they have reported more than 42,000 apparitions at the site, which was largely untouched by the 1992-95 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

In April, the then-prefect of the Congregation for Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Gerhard Muller, told KAI ageny it still could “take a long time” for the Vatican to rule on the apparitions, despite Archbishop Hoser’s pastoral visitation.

Bishop Ratko Peric of Mostar-Duvno, the local ordinary, has consistently dismissed the Medjugorje apparitions as false, like his predecessor, Bishop Pavao Zanic, and appealed to bishops abroad not to support pilgrimages there.

However, in March, Cardinal Vinko Puljic of Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, defended the shrine as “Europe’s largest confessional,” and said he counted on the Vatican to appreciate its evangelical potential in generating “conversions and acts of grace.”

Pope Francis told reporters traveling with him from Fatima, Portugal, in May that the most important fact about Medjugorje is “the spiritual fact, the pastoral fact” that thousands of pilgrims go to Medjugorje and are converted. “For this there is no magic wand; this spiritual-pastoral fact cannot be denied.”

The spiritual fruits of the pilgrimages, he said, are the reason why in February he appointed Archbishop Hoser to study the best ways to provide pastoral care to townspeople and the pilgrims.

Speaking to reporters May 13, Pope Francis gave no indication of when a final pronouncement about the alleged apparitions would be made. However, the said that a commission set up by then-Pope Benedict XVI had spent years investigating the phenomenon and tended to believe the apparitions in that first week of the summer of 1981 may have been real, but the continued reports of apparitions are questionable.

Furthermore, Pope Francis told the press, “personally, I am more ‘mischievous.’ I prefer Our Lady to be a mother, our mother, and not a telegraph operator who sends out a message every day at a certain time — this is not the mother of Jesus.”

EUCHARISTIC MIRACLE IN POLAND

Legnica, Poland, Apr 18, 2016 / 02:59 pm (CNA/EWTN News) – A bleeding Host that “has the hallmarks of a Eucharistic miracle” was approved for veneration in Poland over the weekend.

The announcement was made by Bishop Zbigniew Kiernikowski of Legnica on April 17.

On Christmas Day 2013, a consecrated Host fell to the floor, the bishop said. It was picked up and placed in a container with water. Soon after, red stains appeared on the host.

Then-Bishop of Legnica, Stefan Cichy, created a commission to monitor the host. In February 2014, a small fragment was placed on a corporal and underwent testing by various research institutes.

The final medical statement by the Department of Forensic Medicine found: “In the histopathological image, the fragments were found containing the fragmented parts of the cross striated muscle. It is most similar to the heart muscle.” Tests also determined the tissue to be of human origin, and found that it bore signs of distress.

Saying that the Host “has the hallmarks of a Eucharistic miracle,” Bishop Kiernikowski explained that in January 2016 he presented the matter to the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

In April, in accordance with the Holy See’s recommendations, he asked parish priest Andrzej Ziombrze “to prepare a suitable place for the Relics so that the faithful could venerate it.”

POLAND, U.S. WORKING TO ENSURE SAFETY OF WORLD YOUTH DAY PILGRIMS

WASHINGTON (CNS) — World Youth Day organizers in the United States and Poland remain in touch with diplomatic and security officials in their respective countries to ensure that pilgrims will remain safe during the festival of faith in late July.

Security is expected to be extremely tight in Krakow, Poland, the WYD host city, as authorities in both countries work to prevent any incident that would threaten visitors, said Paul Jarzembowski, World Youth Day USA coordinator and assistant director of youth and young adult ministries for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

He told Catholic News Service current information indicates no threat to the celebration, scheduled for July 26-31.

“The pilgrims’ families can be assured that we’re in regular communication with the State Department, the organizers in Krakow and the Polish Embassy in the United States,” Jarzembowski said.

“Pilgrims can rest assured if they are vigilant and aware and up to date on the security situation, that the U.S. and, most especially Poland, are doing everything they can to assure their safety,” he added.

About 2 million people, including 30,000 Americans, are expected for the 14th international gathering of young people to celebrate their Catholic faith.

The USCCB will conduct a webinar on safety and security at 2 p.m. April 14. Information is available at bit.ly/1UrnhZE.

Jarzembowski’s office has devoted a section of its World Youth Day USA website to safety and security. It details how the USCCB is partnering with other organizations to address security concerns and offers tips on preparing for the trip, including routine measures that travelers can take ahead of any international journey.

Updates are also available on Facebook and on Twitter at @WYDUSA.

As the host country, Poland is taking the lead on security arrangements, and local law enforcement authorities have joined with the Polish military in planning for the influx of visitors for months, Jarzembowski said.

“We don’t want to let fear dictate what we do with World Youth Day,” he said.

He cited the calls for prayers for peace from St. John Paul II at previous World Youth Day events in the 1980s and 1990s when attacks by extremists posed similar concerns.

“We continue to meet and we continue to pray for peace and we continue to be bold by stepping out and doing that,” Jarzembowski said.

SAINT PROFILE: KUNIGUNDE OF POLAND

The daughter of Hungarian royalty, Kunigunde, also called Kinga, was married at 16 to King Boleslaus IV of Poland. According to tradition, she told him she had vowed to live celibately. He agreed to this for a year, then they both took a vow of celibacy before the bishop. He is known as Boleslaus the Chaste, though the title may have come from a need to explain the couple’s childlessness. They ruled together for 40 years, and she was generous in supporting the Friars Minor, the poor and sick, and in ransoming Christian prisoners from the Turks. In widowhood, Kunigunde entered a Poor Clares convent she founded.

POLAND IS SITE OF WORLD YOUTH DAY 2016: 2 MILLION EXPECTED

WARSAW, Poland (CNS) — A new airport, improved road and rail links, a fleet of dream buses and “Youth Bible” are among features projected for the Catholic Church’s 14th international celebration of World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland, in 2016.

“It’s still 16 months to go, but the planning is well advanced,” said Monsignor Bronislaw Fidelus, a co-organizer of the event scheduled for July 26-Aug. 1.

“There’s huge interest abroad, and we’ve already registered large church groups from the U.S., Europe and Latin America. We’re sure the theme of Divine Mercy, chosen specially by the pope, will create a real openness to Christ among young participants,” Monsignor Fidelus said.

World Youth Day organizers expect the international event will attract more than 2 million people from around the world.

Monsignor Fidelus said the program was approved March 13 by a Vatican delegation under Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko, president of the Pontifical Council for Laity, adding that the Polish church counted on the five-day event to renew the faith among young Catholics everywhere.

Meanwhile, a Krakow official said work was underway to expand the city’s communication and transport network and road and rail links with Europe as well as to renovate local schools to accommodate pilgrims.

“Having hosted several pilgrimages by the late St. John Paul II to his home city, Krakow is well equipped and prepared for large-scale events like this,” Filip Szatanik, spokesman for the Krakow City Council, told Catholic News Service.

“It’s also a great church city, full of sacral buildings and objects and closely linked to Poland’s Christian history. We can count especially on this side of its character to make this a major promotional opportunity,” he said.

Launched by St. John Paul II in 1985, World Youth Day is celebrated annually on a local level and every two or three years with an international gathering with the pope.

Krakow was announced as the 2016 venue by Pope Francis at the last World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro in 2013.

World Youth Day will have the theme, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy” (Matthew 5:7), and will follow April 2016 church-state celebrations of the 1,050th anniversary of Poland’s Christian conversion.

Pope Francis is scheduled to lead a televised Way of the Cross procession from the city’s Divine Mercy Sanctuary, followed by a prayer vigil on youth issues near the Wieliczka Salt Mine, and a final Mass in Krakow’s Blonia Park.

The World Youth Day website said the festival would feature a tent museum with Vatican exhibits and concerts and exhibitions at more than 100 locations, as well as “wayside catechesis” sessions in 30 languages and a “reconciliation zone” with several hundred confessionals.

It added that Poland’s 16 archdioceses and 28 dioceses had so far pledged accommodation for 373,000 foreign visitors, and said the organizing committee had been asked to add canoe trips and mountain hikes to enable foreign pilgrims to sample the life of St. John Paul II, who was archbishop of Krakow from 1964 to 1978.

Pope Francis also has been invited to visit Wadowice, where John Paul II was born in 1920, during his visit.

Organizers said the “Youth Bible,” under preparation at the Catholic University of Lublin, would present the New Testament in contemporary language without “archaic expressions.”

They added that the “virtual prayer marathon,” launched March 13, would enable young Christians to show where they were “praying to change the world,” or requesting prayers, by clicking on a website, www.mayfeelings.com/prayforwyd.
