SERVITE GRAD AND NOTRE DAME STUDENT INTERN BRINGS JOY TO SOUTHWEST COMMUNITY CENTER IN SANTA ANA

By Irv Cuevas, Notre Dame Club Orange County     8/30/2018

Servite graduate and now University of Notre Dame sophomore Joe Mastroni served his summer internship at the Southwest Community Center (SWCC) in Santa Ana, and recently provided a Christmas-style holiday thrill for a large number of children.

As a summer intern, Joe organized a Christmas party on July 21st, complete with lunch, treats, arts and crafts, and wrapped gifts enjoyed by many neighborhood children.

The SWCC and volunteers extended a hearty thanks to Mastroni for all he did to make the party a huge hit with the children, and they wished him well ahead of his return to Notre Dame for the fall semester.

Mastroni drew special praise from SWCC’s administrative leaders. Director Connie Jones praised Joe for the “wonderful job he did with the Christmas In July party, making for a very joyous occasion for the children.” Jones added, “Not only did the summer service experience enrich Joe, but it also enriched the children because their attendance at the party required that they themselves do some sort of community or family service or chore.”

And according to Jessie Allen, SWCC volunteer coordinator, Mastroni’s performance was “outstanding in not only spearheading the Christmas party, but also in his day-to-day service at the center, demonstrating patience and calmness with all the clients and volunteers; a willingness to pitch in wherever needed in service delivery; and screening, scheduling and interviewing clients for rental assistance.”

Joe Mastroni is a 2017 Servite High School outstanding graduate who distinguished himself during his high school career: Salutatorian of his graduating class; Scholar-Athlete of the Year (2017); tennis team captain & MVP; officeholder of one of the top student leadership/government positions; and found time to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

Now at Notre Dame, he carries a strong academic load, double-majoring in Neuroscience & Behavior and Philosophy.

Mastroni’s parents, Angela and Frank Mastroni, are parishioners at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Huntington Beach, where they also reside.
