OC Catholic scouts receive religious emblems at St. Joachim Church

Last month Auxiliary Bishop Timothy Freyer celebrated Mass with Deacon Nick Sherg and Father Mike Hanifin, past National Chaplain on Scouting at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church. Over 100 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venture Crew youth received recognition for completing their Religious Emblems. They included:  

  • Light of Christ emblems were presented for the Tiger and Wolf ranks to 20 scouts.
  • Parvuli Dei emblems were presented to 52 Bear and Webelo scouts.
  • Ad Altare emblems were presented to 37 Boy and Venture scouts.
  • Four Pope Pius XII emblems were presented to Boy and Venture scouts.

 

Additionally, one scout, Jonathan Bergler, received the Pillars of Faith Award for completing all 4 Emblems during his time in scouting. 

There were 13 youth recognized for their outstanding service at their local parish, earning the St. Francis of Assisi Service Award. 

Jonathan Clarke, Christopher Mc Andrews, Tyler Nguyen and Alex Rodriguez were recognized for their Eagle projects of the year. 

Alyson Do, of the Bishops Crew, received special recognition Venturing Summit Award, which is the Venture equivalent of the Eagle Scout Award, as well as the Vic Rogers Award, that recognizes young adults for their continual and dedicated service to the spiritual growth of Scouts. 

Five Parishes were recognized for earning the Pope Paul VI award, awarded to Catholic partnered units who have earned the National Catholic Committee on Scouting Quality Unit Award. 

  • Cub Pack 227, St. Bonaventure
  • Scout Troop 604, Santiago de Compostela
  • Scout Troop 671, St. Irenaeus
  • Scout Troop 691, St. John Neumann
  • Bishops Crew 1910 partnered by the Diocese of Orange Catholic Committee on Scouting

 

Michael Bergler, St. Thomas More; Julie Foy, St. Hedwig; Roger Ladina; St. John Neumann; and Tait Skifstrom, St. Bonaventure all received the Bronze Pelican by the Diocese Catholic Committee on Scouting for their service. 

There were 3 adults awarded the National Catholic Committee on Scouting St. George Emblem.  Marty Cutrone, BSA staff advisor, Diana Pham, Blessed Sacrament and Ron Young, St. Bonaventure. 

Lastly, Deacon Nick Sherg was honored with distinguished Msgr. Sammon Award for his years of service to St. Martin De Porres parish and his years of service to the Diocese of Orange Catholic Committee on Scouting.
