This English bishop, known for his simplicity, generosity and reforms, was canonized within 10 years of his death. Following studies at Oxford and Paris, he served as chancellor to St. Edmund at Canterbury. Ordained in France, he was elected bishop of Chichester in 1244, but could not begin his duties for tow years, until difficulties with King Henry III were resolved. He worked hard to stem church abuses and authored the prayer that ends “May I know thee more clearly, love thee more dearly and follow thee more nearly,” made famous through “Godspell.”
