RUNNING FOR VETERANS

SMCHS TRACK AND FIELD PROGRAM WILL DONATE ALL EAGLE INVITATIONAL MEET PROCEEDS TO THE WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA — The Santa Margarita Catholic High School track and field program will donate all proceeds from its 18th annual Eagle Invitational track meet to the nonprofit Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), which supports a full range of programs and services for injured veterans and their families.

The invitational meet will be held Feb. 28, Originally begun as a tri-meet with Santa Margarita, St. John Bosco and Mater Dei high schools before the three teams joined the Trinity League in 2000, the meet now hosts eight teams. This year, participating high schools will include Santa Margarita, Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, Esperanza, Newport Harbor, Murrieta Valley, Mater Dei, St. John Bosco and JSerra. The first race of the day will go off at 10 a.m.

The 20 programs and services provided by the WWP are structured to nurture the mind and body and encourage economic empowerment and engagement. More than 52,000 servicemen and women have been injured in recent military conflicts. Beyond physical wounds, an estimated 400,000 veterans live with combat-related stress, major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
