MUSIC FROM THE TOWER: GUEST IS MARK PURCELL

2/9/2019

Episode No. 55 Saturday, February 9, 2019 Mark T. Purcell, Pastoral Associate for Liturgy and Music, SS Simon and Jude Parish, Huntington Beach

Enjoy a great visit with one of the best parish musicians in the Diocese of Orange, Mark Purcell. Mark has served his present parish as a full-time musician since 1997, and just this past year celebrated 50 years as a church organist!! A native of Pennsylvania, Mark grew up in Scranton, playing the organ since grade school. He studied at St. Pius X Seminary and University of Scranton. Inspired by the Hour of Power TV show and organist Richard Unfried, he moved to California to study with Richard. He became his student and earned degrees from Chapman University and later Notre Dame University. It is a fascinating story of this wonderful musician, who continues to make great music Sunday after Sunday in one of our finest parishes here in Southern California. Hear Mark as he talked about his ministry and even a bit about the important role music plays in today’s Liturgy and how he has seen it grow and change over the years. You will even enjoy one of Mark’s celebrated compositions, “Gloria” from the Mass for St. Junipero Serra, a favorite here in the Diocese of Orange and here at Christ Cathedral.
