ST. IRENAEUS MINISTRY SPOTLIGHTS HOW FASHION INDUSTRY SPURS HUMAN TRAFFICKING

By Edna Ethington     9/19/2017

The Stop Human Trafficking Ministry at St. Irenaeus Church in Cypress recently presented a screening of the film, “The True Cost,” the documentary by Andrew Morgan about the exploitation of workers in garment factories around the world and cotton fields in the United States. Approximately 30 attended the late-August screening held in the church’s Education Building.

According to the film, 97 percent of clothing that is purchased in the U.S. is made by people in undeveloped countries, with only 3 percent made in the U.S. The film showed examples of people in Bangladesh and other undeveloped countries who are forced to work for $2 or $3 a day, often in an unsafe work environment. The film also showed how the quest to turn a profit has resulted in human trafficking.

All are invited to attend the next meeting on Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. at the Education Building of St. Irenaeus Church. For more information, contact Janet Bica at (714) 743-011
