RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA — More than 500 special needs athletes from throughout Orange County competed in the 25 meter and 50 meter dash races and the softball toss as part of the Seventh Annual Special Olympics hosted by students at Santa Margarita Catholic High School on March 8.

The athletes came from several different school districts, including Brea, Anaheim, Garden Grove and Capistrano Valley, and ranged in age from elementary school students to adult transitional school students.

Sophomore SMCHS students greeted each athlete and served as ambassadors throughout the day, escorting athletes to the various events and offering coaching and support.

Activities also included arts and crafts, face painting and a dance-off at the end of the day.
