In honor of the last official National Signing Day for the 2019-2020 school year, several student athletes from Orange County Catholic high schools were recognized and celebrated virtually for making their commitments to college athletic programs.
At JSerra Catholic High School, six athletes from six different sports signed letters of intent to continue their athletic careers.
A standout on the basketball court for the Lions, center Francesco Borra will be playing for University of California, Davis.
Third baseman Colby Canales is headed to University of Pacific to play baseball.
Distance runner Rylan Engles will be running cross country and track for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
From the soccer pitch, defender Morgan Fischel committed to Central Washington University.
Sarah Shaw will be joining the women’s basketball program at Cal State University, Monterey Bay.
Krystina Wilson is headed to Washington University in St. Louis to continue her golf career.
“Goals are essential and possess an achievable beginning and end,” says JSerra Athletic Director, Chris Ledyard, to the athletes, “…and the answer to ‘why’ will keep each of us focusing on the true goal and not solely the scoreboard.”
Rosary Academy honored five athletes this spring from across four sports for their college commitments.
From the basketball court, Caylee Santos will be playing for Cal State University, Los Angeles, and Kate Goostrey is headed to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Midfielder Camille Aquino committed to continuing her soccer career at Dominican University.
Four-year Rosary golfer Gabriella Mendoza will continue her playing career at Hope International University.
From the pool, utility player and senior captain Amelia Gonzalez will be playing water polo for Iona College.
We are extremely proud of the athletic prowess of the class of 2020,” says Rosary Athletic Director, Tom Tice. “Not only has it brought us three basketball championships and a water polo title, but now we are sending 10 (total) of our best to represent Rosary in the college ranks. From a graduating class of fewer than 90, this is an amazing number of top student athletes.”
Servite High School recognized 10 senior athletes representing eight sports.
From the baseball diamond, pitcher Matthew Schavone is headed to the University of Nevada, Reno.
Basketball player Kunal Bagga will be taking his skills to Whittier College.
Running back Derek Fuentes will continue his football career at Chapman University.
Three-year varsity soccer players Ernesto Garcia and Ryan Kay are both headed to University of La Verne.
Defending Trinity League Champion pole vaulter Nolan Blachowski committed to the track and field program at University of Notre Dame.
Three-year varsity letterman Cole Rasic is headed to Pepperdine University to join their men’s volleyball program.
From the pool, three-year varsity letterman Tommy Lien will be playing water polo for Loyola Marymount University.
Two Servite wrestlers will continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Neil Carter is headed to Life Pacific University, and Valor Buck has committed to the United States Air Force Academy.
“In these uncertain times one thing is for certain, the class of 2020 will go on to achieve great things,” says Servite Athletic Director, Alan Clinton. “We are extremely proud of the way these student athletes have handled themselves and the situation they have been dealt to close out their high school careers. Although many of them lost their senior seasons, they have remained resilient and focused on accomplishing their goals moving forward. We are proud to call them Friars and are excited to see what they will achieve at the next level.”
