MEET DEACON STEVE & GLORIA-JEAN MUTZ

OUR LADY OF MT. CARMEL, NEWPORT BEACH

By STAFF     1/31/2017

YEARS MARRIED: 40

CHILDREN: 2

GRANDCHILDREN: 1

YEARS IN THE DIACONATE: 13

HOW THEY MET: A blind date by a matchmaker personal friend (pre dot com dating) who tried to introduce us for over two years.

WHAT THEY DO FOR FUN: Go to the beach, gardening, travel, baseball, care for our hive (we are bee keepers), enjoy our family

HIS ROLE IN THE CHURCH: I see myself as a trusted, decisive yet pragmatic, humble leader who enjoys the happiness I can share with others. Being a deacon has a lot of responsibilities and pit falls that remind us we are God’s servants.

WHAT DREW HIM TO THE DIACONATE: I had no idea what a deacon was when Fr. Kruse approached me. I discerned for 5 years of formation. When I discovered I could retain my sense of humor and still be effective in spreading His word and serving others, that was a joyous day.

HIS GREATEST CHALLENGE: Remembering that I am human. I make mistakes and sin. Also I need to listen to what God wants me to do, not what I think should be done or said.

FAVORITE SCRIPTURE: Matthew 5 3-12: The Beatitudes
